Chesterton Trojan Showcase Grand Champion

The Expressions had a fantastic competition weekend in Chesterton, Indiana winning Grand Champion at the 3rd Annual Trojan Championship. Hosted by the Chesterton High School Trojans, the competition was as fierce as the weather was blustery. Due to the snow and a forecast of blizzard like conditions, several schools left early and others were complete no shows.

The Expressions’ day started off with the solo competition at 2:30 p.m. Five talented singers competed including Cole Festenstein, Domingo Morales, Milan Babic, Jeremy Hamburger and Mia Connery. Festenstein impressed the judges and placed second in the men’s competition. The first place male winner left early, giving Festenstein the opportunity to wow the audience before the finals with his performance of “Flight.”

At 5:10 p.m. The Expressions’ Tribute to Michael Jackson rocked the preliminary competition. Despite a minor lighting glitch, the show went on and what a “Thriller” night it was. The Expressions singing and dancing outperformed the competition and helped them to win Best Large Showchoir, Best Vocals, Best Choreography, Best Band and Best Visuals. The audience loved the moonwalk, the Jackson Five and the grand finale with the special glow in the dark effects. Rachel VanderVeen was named Outstanding Performer by the judges.

The Trojan Championship finals were organized a little bit different than other championships. Typically only the large show choirs compete in the finals, but at this championship the six groups with the highest scores were the ones invited to compete. This provided a nice mix of large choirs and unisex groups for the audience to watch, as well as a mix of traditional and more contemporary shows. As one of only five groups invited to compete in the finals, The Expressions once again impressed the audience and judges with their singing, dancing and high energy performance. At the end of the night and the end of a suspenseful awards program, The Expressions were named Grand Champion.

The Expressions have several more performances coming up this season, including:

We hope to see you at one of them.
